Eugène Chassaignac, a native of Nantes, France, came to New Orleans, La., during the 1850s. He was a music educator and became a well-known composer. His works included popular Confederate songs; this collection includes later compositions. He became a naturalized American citizen, and died in New Orleans in 1878.
